What are the standard carport sizes?
Sellers and guides print different standards. Metal America lists 12x20x8 for one car and 20x21x8 for two (updated June 12, 2026). Angi lists 12x20 for one car and 24x20 for two (updated July 8, 2026). Bulldog Steel Structures lists 12x21 for a sedan or compact SUV and 20x21 for two full-size vehicles (updated May 2026). Alan's Factory Outlet says its most common sizes run from 12x21 to 18x42. Google's AI Overview for this query on October 6, 2026 ranged from 12x20 for one vehicle to 24x30 or larger for several. The chart below holds 17 sizes, so each of those can be found in one place. The dimension carport guide explains the three numbers in a name such as 12x20x8.
What are the carport sizes in square feet and meters?
A 20x20 carport covers 400 square feet, which is 20 ft times 20 ft, or 37.2 square meters at 0.09290304 square meters per square foot. Meters use 0.3048 per foot. The last column shows how many times each size covers 200 sq ft, the line in the 2021 IRC R105.2 for one-story detached accessory structures.
| Size (ft) | Area (sq ft) | Width (m) | Length (m) | Area (sq m) | Times 200 sq ft | Size page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10x20 | 200 | 3.05 | 6.10 | 18.6 | 1 | 10x20 carport |
| 12x12 | 144 | 3.66 | 3.66 | 13.4 | 0.7 | 12x12 carport |

| 20x40 | 800 | 6.10 | 12.19 | 74.3 | 4 | 20x40 carport |
| 24x24 | 576 | 7.32 | 7.32 | 53.5 | 2.9 | 24x24 carport |

| 30x40 | 1,200 | 9.14 | 12.19 | 111.5 | 6 | 30x40 carport |
Only 10x20 sits on the 200 sq ft line, and 12x12 sits below it at 0.7 times. Every other size in the chart is at least 1.2 times the line, and 30x40 is 6 times it.
The 2021 IRC R105.2, item 1, exempts one-story detached accessory structures up to 200 square feet, as Grant County, WA publishes it. Local codes can set a lower or higher line, so confirm yours with the local building department. The carport permit rules guide covers permits in more detail.
What does each carport width hold, according to sellers?
Sources agree on how wide a one-car carport is and split on what 18 ft and 30 ft hold. The table lists what each source says, with the date or the day read.
| Width | Source and date | What the source says the size holds |
|---|---|---|
| 18 ft | Alan's Factory Outlet (modified June 1, 2026) | One car, in its 12 to 18 ft range |
| 18 ft | Angi (updated July 8, 2026) | 18x20 for one car with storage |
| 18 ft | Metal Carport Depot (read October 6, 2026) | 18x21 for two compact cars |
| 18 ft | Eagle Carports (page prints no date) | Compact cars only, in its 18 to 24 ft two-car range |
| 20 ft | Metal America (updated June 12, 2026) | 20x21x8 for two cars |
| 20 ft | Bulldog Steel Structures (updated May 2026) | 20x21 for two full-size vehicles |

| 30 ft | Angi (updated July 8, 2026) | 30x20 for two cars with storage, and 30x18 as its minimum for three cars |
At 18 ft wide the sources above say one car, one car with storage and two compact cars. Ask a seller which vehicles a width was sized for before you compare quotes.
What carport sizes do sellers list for RVs and boats?
Sellers size an RV carport by the length and the leg height, so the numbers below end in a height. Each row is the source's own pairing of a size and a vehicle.
| Source and date | Size (ft) | What the source pairs it with |
|---|---|---|
| Eagle Carports (page prints no date) | 12x20x10 | Small camper or pop-up |
| Eagle Carports (page prints no date) | 12x25x10 | Travel trailer, 20 to 25 ft |
| Eagle Carports (page prints no date) | 12x30x12 | Class B or mid-size RV |
| Eagle Carports (page prints no date) | 18x35x14 | Class C or fifth wheel |
| Eagle Carports (page prints no date) | 20x45x16 | Class A or toy hauler |
| Metal America (updated June 12, 2026) | 14x40x13 | RV or motorhome |
| Metal America (updated June 12, 2026) | 12x30x12 | Boat with trailer |
| Keen's Buildings (updated March 2026) | 16x36 | A single RV |
| Metal Carport Depot (read October 6, 2026) | 24x41 | Class A RV, or two vehicles plus a boat |
For a Class A RV or a motorhome the sources give 20x45x16, 24x41 and 14x40x13, so the width runs from 14 to 24 ft. Measure the RV with its roof air conditioner and add clearance before you pick a leg height.
What does a carport cost at each size?
Metal Carport Depot prints a Regular Style price ladder with free delivery, installation and anchoring in the states it lists. The page prints no date, and the prices are its starting prices as read on October 6, 2026.
| Size (ft) | Area (sq ft) | Listed price | Per sq ft | Roof style |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12x21 | 252 | $1,495 | $5.93 | Regular |
| 12x31 | 372 | $1,995 | $5.36 | Regular |
| 18x21 | 378 | $1,695 | $4.48 | Regular |
| 18x31 | 558 | $2,445 | $4.38 | Regular |
| 20x26 | 520 | $2,295 | $4.41 | Regular |
| 22x31 | 682 | $2,845 | $4.17 | Regular |
| 24x31 | 744 | $3,045 | $4.09 | Regular |
| 24x36 | 864 | $3,545 | $4.10 | Regular |
| 24x41 | 984 | $5,995 | $6.09 | Vertical Roof |
From 18x21 to 24x36 the price per square foot stays between $4.09 and $4.48. The 12x21 costs $5.93 per square foot, and the 24x41 costs $6.09 because lengths over 36 ft require the Vertical Roof Style.
| 12x21 roof style | Starting price | Against Regular Style |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | $1,495 | Base |
| Boxed Eave | $1,595 | 6.7% more |
| Vertical Roof | $2,195 | 46.8% more |
The same 12x21 starts at $1,495 in Regular Style, $1,595 in Boxed Eave and $2,195 in Vertical Roof on that page. Prices are listed by the seller on the date shown and change often. A listed price is not a quote, and heights, gauge and local wind and snow certification change it. For the steel behind these styles, see the metal carports guide. For cost beyond one seller's ladder, see the carport cost guide.
How do added feet and in-between sizes change the price?
On the same ladder, each added square foot of length costs the same. Each added square foot of width costs less. The table subtracts one row from another.
| Step on the ladder | Added area (sq ft) | Added price | Per added sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12x21 to 12x31 | 120 | $500 | $4.17 |
| 18x21 to 18x31 | 180 | $750 | $4.17 |
| 24x31 to 24x36 | 120 | $500 | $4.17 |
| 12x21 to 18x21 | 126 | $200 | $1.59 |
| 12x31 to 18x31 | 186 | $450 | $2.42 |
| 18x31 to 24x31 | 186 | $600 | $3.23 |
Each added foot of length costs $4.17 per added square foot at 12, 18 and 24 ft wide. A wider step costs $1.59 to $3.23.
Metal Carport Depot prices a custom size at the next size up. A 16x28 carport (448 sq ft) is priced as an 18x31, which lists at $2,445. That is $5.46 per square foot of the carport you get, against $4.38 listed. Superior Portable Buildings says it can make any size in between. Ask whether a seller prices the size you want or the next size up.
What should you check before you compare two prices for one size?
Two listings with the same size can price different work. Five checks keep the comparison fair.
| Check | What the sources read show |
|---|---|
| Is installation included? | Metal Carport Depot and Alan's Factory Outlet list free delivery and installation. Google's carousel on October 6, 2026 also listed an Arrow 12x20x7 at $1,234.99 (Tractor Supply), and the price line does not say what it covers |
| Is it a starting price? | Metal Carport Depot prints "starting at" prices and shows live prices after you pick a roof style and a state |
| Which roof style is priced? | The 12x21 table above runs from $1,495 to $2,195 by roof style |
| Which leg height is priced? | Metal Carport Depot legs start at 6 ft and rise to 16 ft at extra cost |
| Which wind and snow certification is included? | Metal Carport Depot says certification varies by state and county. Ask for the rating in writing for your address |
What are carport sizes in meters?
Metric sizes are rounded. Plan7Architect, modified November 9, 2025, lists a single carport as 3 x 6 m (10 x 20 ft). It lists a double as 6 x 6 m (20 x 20 ft). In feet, 3 x 6 m is 9.84 x 19.69 ft, or 193.75 sq ft, so its 10 x 20 ft figure is rounded up. The chart's 20x20 is 6.10 x 6.10 m, or 37.2 sq m, against 36 sq m for 6 x 6 m.
How tall are the carports in these sizes?
The last number in a name such as 12x20x8 is usually the leg height, and the peak sits higher. Alan's Factory Outlet says a standard carport is around 8 ft tall, and Metal America lists legs of 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 ft. Bulldog Steel Structures lists legs of 7 to 8 ft for sedans and 9 to 10 ft for lifted trucks. It lists 12 to 13 ft for a Class C RV. Height changes the price, so check it on each listing. The dimension carport guide covers the three heights in detail.
Which size page covers your footprint?
The last column of the chart links the 14 sizes that have a page of their own. The 12x20 and 12x24 pages cover one car, the 20x20 and 24x24 pages cover two, and the 30x20, 30x30 and 30x40 pages cover three. The 16x40 page covers an RV, and the 20x30 and 20x40 pages cover extra length. Each page computes the gap in inches for named vehicles, which a chart of sizes cannot show. The carport dimensions page does the same for one to three vehicles. The carport size guide compares sizes by vehicle fit.
Common questions about carport sizes
Sellers print different standards. Metal America lists 12x20x8 for one car and 20x21x8 for two, and Angi lists 12x20 and 24x20 (June and July 2026). The chart holds 17 sizes.
Angi lists 10x18 as its minimum for one car and 20x18 for two side by side (July 8, 2026). Eagle Carports says one-vehicle carports generally need a width of at least 12 ft.
Alan's Factory Outlet lists 20 to 24 ft wide for two cars. Metal Carport Depot lists 18x21 for two compact cars and 24x31 for two vehicles plus a workspace.
Seller-installed listings for 24 ft wide carports ran from $2,495 to $4,987.50 on October 5, 2026, and Carport Solution listed its 24x24 at $2,800. The ladder above lists a 24x31 at $3,045.
Sellers list a 20 ft wide carport for two cars. Metal America lists 20x21x8 and Bulldog lists 20x21 for two full-size vehicles. The 20x20 page computes the gap in inches.
A 20x20 carport covers 400 square feet, which is 2 times the 200 square foot line in the 2021 IRC R105.2. Confirm current requirements with your local building department.
Sources disagree on 18 ft. Metal Carport Depot lists 18x21 for two compact cars, Eagle Carports says compact cars only at 18 ft, and Alan's Factory Outlet lists 18 ft in its one-car range.
The last number in a listing such as 12x20x8 is the leg height, and the peak sits higher. Alan's Factory Outlet says a regular-roof carport 12 ft wide with 12 ft legs rises 2 ft 3 in at the center.
