12x24 Carport: 288 Sq Ft, What Fits and Where It Stops

CarportBay Editorial Team Last verified

A 12x24 carport measures 12 feet by 24 feet, or 288 square feet. It fits one vehicle, including a crew-cab pickup. A 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 at 241.4 inches leaves 46.6 inches of spare length. Two midsize sedans end to end need about 32 feet, so a 12x24 holds one vehicle.

How big is a 12x24 carport?

A 12x24 carport measures 12 feet wide by 24 feet long, or 144 by 288 inches, which is 288 square feet of covered area. The first number is the width and the second is the length.

A 24x12 listing names the long side first, so the area stays 288 square feet. Check which side faces the driveway, because a vehicle needs the 24 ft side to run front to back.

Those sizes are nominal. The legs and frame take some room, so the clear width between posts is a little smaller than 144 in, and the seller's specification gives the exact figure. Every number here uses the nominal footprint, so read spare length and side room as upper limits.

What fits in a 12x24 carport?

A 12x24 carport holds one vehicle shorter than 24 feet, and the Camry, RAV4, F-150 SuperCrew, Silverado 1500 crew cab and F-250 crew cab checked here all fit lengthwise. Table 1 prints the arithmetic from published dimensions, in inches. Spare length is 288 in minus the vehicle length, and side room is 144 in minus the vehicle width.

2025 Ford F-250 Super Duty crew cab (long bed)266.280.0 body, 105.9 mirrors out81.421.838.1 mirrors out (19.1 each side)Tight

Side room uses the widest published width, which is mirrors out for the F-150 and F-250. The Camry and Silverado widths are body only, and the RAV4 listing does not say. A gap under 30 in on each side is marked tight.

Cars and SUVs

A 12x24 carport leaves 94 inches of spare length for a 2025 Toyota Camry and 107.1 inches for a 2025 Toyota RAV4. The Camry is 194 in long and 72 in wide, so side room is 72 in, or 36 in on each side if centered. The RAV4 is 180.9 in long and 73.0 in wide, which leaves 71.0 in of side room and 35.5 in on each side.

Both leave more than 30 in on each side, so neither is marked tight. Parking off center changes the split, not the total. For footprints built around one vehicle, see single-car carport sizes.

Full-size pickups

A 12x24 carport leaves 56.0 inches of spare length for a 2025 Ford F-150 SuperCrew with a 67.1 in bed, and 46.6 inches for a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab. The F-150 is 232.0 in long, and 95.7 in wide with mirrors out (79.9 in without them). The Silverado is 241.4 in long and 81.2 in wide.

The Silverado figure is for the standard bed. A crew cab with the shorter bed is 231.9 in long at Edmunds, so bed length decides the result. Check your own truck's specification.

Heavy-duty pickups

A 12x24 carport leaves 21.8 inches of spare length for a 2025 Ford F-250 Super Duty crew cab with the long bed, which is 266.2 in long. Ford's 2025 Super Duty specification lists that length, 80.0 in of width and 105.9 in with standard mirrors. Side room is 38.1 in, or 19.1 in on each side, so the truck is marked tight.

The short-bed crew cab is 250.0 in long on the same sheet and leaves 38.0 in. Box length changes the margin by 16.2 in, so check the exact truck.

How many cars fit in a 12x24 carport?

A 12x24 carport fits one vehicle: two 2025 Toyota Camrys measure 388 inches end to end, 100 inches more than the carport's length. Side by side, the two measure 144 inches without mirrors, exactly the carport width, which leaves no room to open a door. Two midsize sedans end to end need about 32.3 ft before any gap, against a 24 ft length. For footprints that hold two, see two-car carport dimensions.

How much side room is there?

A 12x24 carport leaves 48.3 inches of total side room for a 2025 Ford F-150 SuperCrew with mirrors out. That is 24.2 in on each side if the truck is centered, or 64.1 in (32.1 in each side) to the body without mirrors. The checker below runs the same arithmetic for a vehicle you choose.

Worked examples from the same data follow.

  • 2025 Toyota Camry: 194 in long, 72 in wide. Inside a 12x24 carport (288 in long, 144 in wide) that leaves 94 in of length and 72 in of total side room (36 in each side if centered).
  • 2025 Ford F-150 SuperCrew: 232.0 in long, 95.7 in wide with mirrors. Inside a 12x24 carport (288 in long, 144 in wide) that leaves 56.0 in of length and 48.3 in of total side room (24.2 in each side if centered).
  • 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab: 241.4 in long, 81.2 in wide. Inside a 12x24 carport (288 in long, 144 in wide) that leaves 46.6 in of length and 62.8 in of total side room (31.4 in each side if centered).

How does a 12x24 compare with the sizes next to it?

A 12x24 carport adds 48 square feet over a 12x20 and is 112 square feet smaller than a 20x20. Table 2 compares six footprints by area, by the side room a Camry and an F-150 keep, and by the spare length the Silverado crew cab has.

Length is what changes the truck answer. The Silverado runs 1.4 in past a 20 ft roof, so a 12x20 is too short for it, while a 12x24 leaves 46.6 in and a 12x25 leaves 58.6 in. The 12x20 carport page covers the shorter footprint.

Width is what changes the door room. Every 12 ft footprint in Table 2 leaves 72 in of side room for a Camry, and an 18x20 leaves 144.0 in. The 18x20 footprint at 360 square feet is a wider option.

For two vehicles, a 20x20 adds 112 square feet over a 12x24 and is the usual starting point. The 20x20 carport page shows door gaps by model.

Why is a 12x24 sometimes built as a 12x25?

Some sellers list a 12x24 carport but build it 12x25: Carport Central's 12x24 page states 300 square feet and a 12x25 build. That page was last modified on November 18, 2024, and was read on October 6, 2026. Carportsrus lists the roof length of its 12x24 as 25 ft, overhanging the frame.

The difference is one foot of length and 12 square feet, so a 12x25 covers 300 sq ft against 288. Two sellers do not show an industry pattern, and carport.com lists its 12x24x7 carports at 288 sq ft.

The extra foot can change a result. At 300 in the Silverado has 58.6 in to spare instead of 46.6 in, and the F-250 has 33.8 in instead of 21.8 in. Read the length line in the specification table, not the title, and search for 12x24, 24x12 and 12x25 when you compare listings.

What does a 12x24 carport cost?

A 12x24 carport was listed from $2,375.00 to $3,420.00 at carport.com on October 6, 2026, depending on roof style and end walls. The regular open style listed at $2,375.00, the custom vertical-roof style at $2,727.46, and a regular style with a closed back and gabled end at $3,420.00.

One listing offers free installation and delivery, and the other two state that the price includes delivery and construction. These are listings from one seller, not quotes, and sellers change them. Carportsrus lists an open vertical-roof 12x24 with 7 ft legs from $2,727 installed as of September 2026, which matches the carport.com custom figure.

A kit price covers the structure, while a price that includes installation adds labor and delivery. Leg height and frame gauge move the price too. The carport.com listings read 14 gauge frame and 29 gauge roof, and Carportsrus lists 14 gauge tubing as standard with a 12 gauge upgrade. A 12x24x7 listing and a 12x24x10 listing describe different carports, so compare the same leg height and the same inclusions. For the seller roles behind each price, see how carports are sold: manufacturer versus dealer.

Leg height, roof and configuration options at 12x24

A 12x24 carport is sold with leg heights from 6 feet to 16 feet, and a 6-foot leg is lower than a 2025 Ford F-150 SuperCrew at 77.1 inches. Alan's Factory Outlet's sizing article lists legs from 6 to 16 ft, Carportsrus lists 7 ft standard up to 16 ft, and carport.com lists 7 ft legs for the 12x24 size.

Clearance is the leg height times 12 minus the vehicle height, measured to the eave. At 6 ft legs (72 in) the Camry has 15.0 in and the RAV4 has 4.8 in. The F-150 stands 5.1 in, the Silverado 3.5 in and the F-250 9.4 in taller than the legs. At 7 ft legs (84 in) the Camry has 27.0 in, the RAV4 16.8 in, the F-150 6.9 in, the Silverado 8.5 in and the F-250 2.6 in. The roof edge sits lower than the eave, so clearance there is smaller.

Roof style changes the profile, not the footprint. Carport Central lists regular, A-frame horizontal and vertical roofs at 12x24, and carport.com lists a regular roof and a custom A-frame vertical roof. Sides, a lean-to against a wall or a heavy duty frame keep the same footprint but change how the frame is built, so read the seller's specification.

Does a 12x24 carport need a permit?

A 12x24 carport covers 288 square feet, above the 200 square feet that the model International Residential Code (IRC), 2021 text, R105.2, exempts for one-story detached accessory structures. That is 88 square feet over the line, so a permit applies under that text unless a local rule says otherwise.

The 2025 California Building Code uses 120 square feet for sheds, playhouses and similar uses. Cities and counties adopt their own editions, and whether a carport counts under that wording is a local question. Learn how carport permit rules work.

This is general information from the code text cited above. Confirm current requirements with your local building department before beginning construction.

When a 12x24 is the wrong size

A 12x24 carport is the wrong size for two vehicles, for a truck near 24 feet long, or for a boat or RV that needs a wider footprint. Two Camrys use all 144 in of width, so doors would open into a leg or the next car.

A heavy-duty long-bed pickup at 266.2 in leaves 21.8 in, and a 12x25 build adds only 12 in. A hitch, bumper or ladder rack shrinks the margin, so measure the truck as parked. A truck near 24 feet long needs a longer roof, such as a 12x30.

An RV or boat trailer is usually taller and longer than a car. Measure overall length with the hitch and overall height with any roof equipment, then compare both with the seller's leg height and roof length. Read RV and boat carport sizes before you choose a footprint.

Next steps: build it yourself or have it installed

Your next step with a 12x24 carport depends on how much of the work you want to do. Test your own vehicle in the checker above, then confirm the frame width, clear width and leg height with the seller.

Prefer to install it yourself? Then compare 12x24 carport kits and the makers behind them. Want a seller to handle the work? Read how to have a carport delivered and installed.
