Carport Dimensions: Width, Length and Height for One to Three Vehicles
CarportBay Editorial Team Last verified
Sellers list carports 12 to 18 ft wide for one vehicle, 18 to 24 ft for two and 26 to 38 ft for three. At 12 ft wide, a 2025 Toyota Camry has 35.8 in per side and a 2026 Ford F-150 has 32.1 in. A 20 ft length is 3.9 in short of the longest F-150.

What do the four carport dimensions mean?
A carport has four dimensions, width, length, leg height and peak height, and a listing such as 12x20x7 gives the first three in feet. Engineered Metal Buildings lists sizes as width by length by height. Superior Portable Buildings writes 18 x 21 x 5 as 18 ft wide, 21 ft long and a 5 ft leg. This page reads the third number as the leg height.
| Dimension | What it measures | How a listing writes it | What it decides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Width | Side to side across the frame | First number: 12 ft in 12x20x7 | Space beside and between vehicles |
| Length | Front to back of the frame | Second number: 20 ft | Room in front of a vehicle |
| Leg height | Height of the posts at the eave | Third number: 7 ft | Clearance above the roof |
| Peak height | Leg height plus the roof rise | Often a separate spec line | Overall height of the structure |
Clear height is the room under the lowest beam, so it is lower than the leg height.
What carport sizes do sellers and guides list?
Sellers and guides list carports by the number of vehicles, and Table 2 sets four of them side by side with the date of each page.
| Vehicles | Angi, updated July 8, 2026 | Alan's, modified June 1, 2026 | Legacy Carports, July 11, 2023 | Plan7Architect, modified November 9, 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One | 12x20 | 12 to 18 ft wide | 12x20; width 10 to 16 ft | 3 x 6 m (10 x 20 ft) |
| Two | 24x20; 30 ft wide optional | 20 to 24 ft wide | 18 to 24 ft wide; 25 ft length option | 6 x 6 m (20 x 20 ft) |
| Three | 36x20 | 30 to 38 ft wide | 26 to 30 ft wide | 8 x 6 m (26 x 20 ft) |
| Length | 20 ft; 18 ft minimum | 21 ft and up | 20 ft; 25 ft alternative | About 20 ft (6 m) |
Each cell is the seller's or guide's own statement, dated by the page.
The sources disagree on which size is typical. Angi lists 12x20 for one vehicle and 24x20 for two, while Alan's Factory Outlet gives 12 to 18 ft wide for one vehicle and 20 to 24 ft for two. This page gives ranges and the arithmetic behind each one, not an average.
For every listed footprint in one chart, see all carport sizes in one chart. The carport size guide covers the other vehicle types.
How wide does a carport need to be?
A 12 ft wide carport leaves 35.8 in on each side of a 2025 Toyota Camry and 32.1 in on each side of a 2026 Ford F-150. The gap is the free width divided by the spaces: two for one vehicle, three for two and four for three. For capacity, see how many cars a carport holds.
Table 3 sets the gap for five vehicle sets at six widths. A gap under 12 in is too little to open a door, a gap of 12 to 29.9 in is tight, and 30 in or more is workable. Those marks are CarportBay's working rule, not a code or a seller rule.
Check your vehicles in a carport
Pick a carport width, length and leg height, then one to three vehicles, to see the gap, length left and height margin.
| Width | One 2025 Camry | One 2026 F-150 | Two Camrys | Two F-150s | Three Camrys |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 ft wide | 35.8 (workable) | 32.1 (workable) | Does not fit | Does not fit | Does not fit |
| 18 ft wide | 71.8 (workable) | 68.1 (workable) | 23.7 (tight) | 18.7 (tight) | Does not fit |
| 20 ft wide | 83.8 (workable) | 80.1 (workable) | 31.7 (workable) | 26.7 (tight) | 5.7 (too little to open a door) |
| 24 ft wide | 107.8 (workable) | 104.1 (workable) | 47.7 (workable) | 42.7 (workable) | 17.7 (tight) |
| 26 ft wide | 119.8 (workable) | 116.1 (workable) | 55.7 (workable) | 50.7 (workable) | 23.7 (tight) |
| 30 ft wide | 143.8 (workable) | 140.1 (workable) | 71.7 (workable) | 66.7 (workable) | 35.7 (workable) |
Gaps use body width, not mirror width. A 2025 Toyota Camry is 72.4 in wide and a 2026 Ford F-150 is 79.9 in wide, or 95.7 in with mirrors. Results use published dimensions and the size you pick. Measure your own vehicle and confirm your seller's frame dimensions.
A listing's width may be measured outside the frame, so confirm the clear width between the posts with the seller.
How much space does one vehicle need beside it?
One 2025 Toyota Camry has 35.8 in per side at 12 ft wide, and one 2026 Ford F-150 has 32.1 in, or 24.2 in with its mirrors extended. A 12x20 carport is 12 ft wide, 20 ft long and 240 sq ft. At 18 ft wide, one Camry has 71.8 in per side and one F-150 68.1 in.
How wide for two or three vehicles?
Two 2025 Toyota Camrys leave 31.7 in per gap in a 20 ft wide carport. Two 2026 Ford F-150s leave 26.7 in, which is under the 30 in line CarportBay uses for tight. At 24 ft wide the two pickups leave 42.7 in, and at 18 ft the two Camrys leave 23.7 in.
Three 2025 Toyota Camrys leave 5.7 in per gap at 20 ft wide, which is too little to open a door. They leave 17.7 in at 24 ft, 23.7 in at 26 ft and 35.7 in at 30 ft.
For a smaller pair, see the 18x20 carport for two compact cars page. Two-vehicle layouts by width are on the 2 car carport dimensions page and in the door gap for two vehicles guide.
How long does a carport need to be?
A 20 ft length is 3.9 in shorter than the longest 2026 Ford F-150, and a 21 ft length leaves 8.1 in in front of it. Length left is the carport length minus the vehicle length, and a negative figure in Table 4 means the vehicle is longer.
A 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab is 241.4 in long, so it is 1.4 in over a 20 ft length and has 10.6 in left at 21 ft. Sellers list 20 ft as the base length, and Alan's Factory Outlet starts its common sizes at 12 x 21.
| Vehicle | Length (in) | 20 ft | 21 ft | 24 ft | 26 ft | 30 ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Toyota Camry | 193.5 | +46.5 | +58.5 | +94.5 | +118.5 | +166.5 |
| 2025 Honda CR-V | 184.8 | +55.2 | +67.2 | +103.2 | +127.2 | +175.2 |
| 2026 Ford F-150, longest build | 243.9 | -3.9 | +8.1 | +44.1 | +68.1 | +116.1 |
| 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab | 241.4 | -1.4 | +10.6 | +46.6 | +70.6 | +118.6 |
| 2026 Ford F-150, shortest build | 209.4 | +30.6 | +42.6 | +78.6 | +102.6 | +150.6 |
The longest F-150 is 243.9 in and the shortest is 209.4 in, both from the 2026 Ford F-150 specification sheet.
At 40 ft long, which is 480 in, two 2025 Toyota Camrys end to end use 387.0 in and leave 93.0 in. Two of the longest F-150s need 487.8 in, which is 7.8 in over.
How tall should the legs be, and how high is the peak?
A 7 ft leg clears a 2026 Ford F-150 by 3.3 in and a 6 ft leg is 8.7 in below its roof. Leg height is not clear height, so the margins in Table 5 come before any beam or roof edge.
Plan7Architect advises leaving at least 8 in above the tallest vehicle. Angi recommends a height of at least 7 ft, and Alan's Factory Outlet puts a carport at about 8 ft tall.
| Vehicle | Height (in) | 6 ft leg | 7 ft leg | 8 ft leg | 9 ft leg | 10 ft leg | 12 ft leg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Toyota Camry | 56.9 | +15.1 | +27.1 | +39.1 | +51.1 | +63.1 | +87.1 |
| 2025 Honda CR-V | 66.5 | +5.5 | +17.5 | +29.5 | +41.5 | +53.5 | +77.5 |
| 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab | 75.4 | -3.4 | +8.6 | +20.6 | +32.6 | +44.6 | +68.6 |
| 2026 Ford F-150 | 80.7 | -8.7 | +3.3 | +15.3 | +27.3 | +39.3 | +63.3 |
Margin is the leg height in inches minus the vehicle height.
Peak height is the leg height plus the roof rise, and the published rises differ. Absolute Steel gives 3 in of rise per 12 in of run, which is 18 in at 12 ft wide. Superior Portable Buildings charts 30 in for a regular roof and 24 in for a boxed eave or vertical roof at 12 ft, not counting leg height or frame rail height.
Alan's Factory Outlet gives 14 ft 3 in of center clearance for a 12 ft wide regular roof on 12 ft legs, which is 27 in over the leg. For taller vehicles, see RV carport heights.
| Width | Rise at 3:12 (Absolute formula) | Superior, regular roof | Superior, boxed eave or vertical | Peak with an 8 ft leg at 3:12 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 ft | 18 in | 30 in | 24 in | 9 ft 6 in |
| 18 ft | 27 in | 36 in | 30 in | 10 ft 3 in |
| 20 ft | 30 in | 36 in | 30 in | 10 ft 6 in |
| 24 ft | 36 in | 42 in | 36 in | 11 ft 0 in |
| 30 ft | 45 in | 54 in | 42 in | 11 ft 9 in |
The 3:12 column is a formula applied to half the width, not a measurement. A seller's own chart governs the carport being bought.
What do listed carport sizes cost?
Engineered Metal Buildings lists a 12x20x6 carport at $2,595 and Keen's Buildings lists a 12x20 from $1,620 to $2,820, with installation in both.
| Seller | Listing | Listed price | Area | Per sq ft | Installed? | Read on |

Prices are listed by each seller on the date shown and change often. A listed price is not a quote. The listings differ in height, roof style, sides and what the price includes.
Angi, in a guide updated July 8, 2026, gives an average carport installation cost of $3,600 and a range of $2,100 to $5,100. For what a kit includes, see the carport kit buying guide.
What are carport dimensions in meters?
A 12x20 carport is 3.66 by 6.10 m and a 20x20 is 6.10 by 6.10 m, found by multiplying feet by 0.3048.
| Footprint (ft) | Width (m) | Length (m) | Area (sq m) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12x20 | 3.66 | 6.10 | 22.3 |
| 18x20 | 5.49 | 6.10 | 33.4 |
| 20x20 | 6.10 | 6.10 | 37.2 |
| 24x24 | 7.32 | 7.32 | 53.5 |
| 30x30 | 9.14 | 9.14 | 83.6 |
| 30x40 | 9.14 | 12.19 | 111.5 |
Meters are feet times 0.3048. Area is square feet times 0.0929.
For three pickups, see a larger carport for three pickups. For oversized vehicles, see a carport for large vehicles.
Does a carport of this size need a permit?
The 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) exempts a one-story detached accessory structure only up to 200 sq ft, so every footprint in Table 9 except 10x20 is over that line.
| Footprint | Area | Times the 200 sq ft line |
|---|---|---|
| 10x20 ft | 200 sq ft | 1 |
| 12x20 ft | 240 sq ft | 1.2 |
| 18x20 ft | 360 sq ft | 1.8 |
| 20x20 ft | 400 sq ft | 2 |
| 24x24 ft | 576 sq ft | 2.9 |
| 30x40 ft | 1200 sq ft | 6 |
This table gives general information from the code cited above. Confirm current requirements with your local building department before beginning construction.
Which carport dimensions suit which vehicles?
One car, one pickup, two cars, two pickups and three cars each point to a different listed size, and Table 10 gives the arithmetic behind each.
| Vehicles | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One 2025 Toyota Camry | 12x20 carport | 35.8 in per side; 46.5 in of length left |
| One 2026 Ford F-150 | 18x21 carport for one pickup | 68.1 in per side at 18 ft; 8.1 in of length left at 21 ft |
| Two 2025 Toyota Camrys | 20x20 carport | 31.7 in per gap; 46.5 in of length left |
| Two 2026 Ford F-150s | 24x24 carport for two pickups | 42.7 in per gap; 44.1 in of length left |
| Three 2025 Toyota Camrys | 30x20 carport for three cars | 35.7 in per gap at 30 ft |
| A pickup with room behind it | 20x30 carport with room behind | 116.1 in of length left behind a 243.9 in F-150 at 30 ft |
A seller's listing may differ in height, roof style and frame, so check it against Tables 3 to 5.
A 12x20 carport is 12 ft wide, 20 ft long and 240 sq ft, or 3.66 by 6.10 m. It leaves 35.8 in per side for a 2025 Toyota Camry and 32.1 in for a 2026 Ford F-150. The longest F-150 is 3.9 in longer than 20 ft.
Two cars fit in a 20x20 carport, with 31.7 in per gap for two Camrys and 26.7 in for two F-150s. The F-150 figure is tight, and three Camrys leave 5.7 in per gap, too little to open a door.
Sellers list 18 to 24 ft wide for two cars, and the width that works depends on the vehicles. Two sedans have 31.7 in per gap at 20 ft, and two pickups have 42.7 in at 24 ft.
A 20x20 carport covers 400 sq ft, and the 2021 IRC R105.2 exempts one-story detached accessory structures only up to 200 sq ft. Local rules differ, so confirm current requirements with your local building department before you build.
A 7 ft leg clears a 2026 Ford F-150 by 3.3 in, and an 8 ft leg by 15.3 in. Both figures come before any beam or roof edge, because leg height is not clear height. Plan7Architect advises leaving at least 8 in above the tallest vehicle.
Multiply feet by 0.3048. A 12x20 carport is 3.66 by 6.10 m, a 20x20 is 6.10 by 6.10 m and a 24x24 is 7.32 by 7.32 m. Table 8 lists six sizes, and square feet times 0.0929 gives square meters.
