30x20 Carport: Three-Car Fit, Depth and Cost Across 30 Feet

CarportBay Editorial Team Last verified

A 30x20 carport is 30 ft wide and 20 ft deep, 600 sq ft with three bays across. Three mid-size cars fit with 35.7 in per gap, but the 20 ft depth holds one vehicle per bay and cannot take two end to end.

Pick one to three vehicles to see the door gap across the 30 ft width, the depth left in 20 ft and the height margin.

How big is a 30x20 carport?

A 30x20 carport measures 30 ft wide by 20 ft deep, so it covers 600 sq ft. Sellers list the footprint as a 30x20, a 30 x 20 carport or a carport 30x20. Width is written first, so the 30 ft side runs across the front. In inches it is 360 in wide and 240 in deep, the figures every door gap here is worked from.

The 600 sq ft footprint at 30 ft wide: three Camrys leave 35.7 in in each of four spaces, and each bay is 20 ft deep. Diagram: CarportBay.

Door gap is the open width left beside and between parked vehicles. Leg height, also called eave height, is the height of the vertical posts. A single bay is one third of the footprint. For one bay on its own, see the single-vehicle carport size.

Sellers also list this footprint as a 30x21. One 30x21 listing has a roof 21 ft long on a frame 20 ft long, so confirm the frame dimensions before planning around a few inches. With 2.5 in leg tubing at each outer edge, as Alan's lists on its 20x30 frame, the clear width between the legs is about 355 in. That trims each door gap for three Camrys by about 1.2 in, to 34.5 in. For other widths and depths, use the carport size guide and sizing calculator.

How many cars fit in a 30x20 carport?

A 30x20 carport fits three mid-size cars side by side when the 30 ft side is the width. The door gap is the width of each open space beside and between vehicles. It equals the footprint width minus the summed vehicle widths, divided by the vehicle count plus 1, so three vehicles leave four spaces. The same arithmetic applies to any carport 30 x 20 listing. The gap formula is the one used for the 20x20 carport.

Every figure below is arithmetic on published vehicle dimensions, worked out by the Editorial Team and never measured on site. Widths exclude mirrors unless a row says so. A gap under 30 in is marked tight.

Results use published vehicle dimensions and the nominal 30 ft by 20 ft footprint. Measure your own vehicle and confirm your seller's frame dimensions.

Three sedans or crossovers across 30 ft

Three 2025 Toyota Camrys, each 72.4 in wide, leave 35.7 in (3 ft) per gap across the 30 ft width of a 30x20 carport. Three 2025 Honda CR-Vs, each 73.5 in wide, leave 34.9 in per gap. A mixed set of a Camry, a CR-V and an F-150 leaves 33.6 in. All three results clear the 30 in mark.

Three pickups and the mirror gap

Three 2026 Ford F-150s, each 79.9 in wide, leave 30.1 in per gap, which sits at the 30 in mark. With mirrors extended to 95.7 in each, the gap falls to 18.2 in, and with mirrors folded to 83.6 in it is 27.3 in. Three 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cabs, each 81.1 in wide, leave 29.2 in.

Pickups fit across 30 ft with less room at the doors. After 2.5 in leg tubing at each edge, three F-150s leave 28.8 in per gap, under the 30 in mark.

How much depth does a 20 ft deep carport leave?

The 20 ft depth of a 30x20 carport is 240 in, enough for one vehicle in each bay. A 2025 Toyota Camry, 193.5 in long, leaves 46.5 in (3.9 ft) behind it, and a 2025 Honda CR-V, 184.8 in long, leaves 55.2 in. Full-size pickups sit at the limit of the depth.

A 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab is 241.4 in long, 1.4 in longer than the depth. A 2026 Ford F-150 in its longest configuration is 243.9 in, 3.9 in longer, while its shortest configuration is 209.4 in and leaves 30.6 in. At 30 ft of depth the same crew cab clears with 118.6 in left, as the 30x30 carport dimensions show.

Vehicle lengths drawn against the 240 in depth: a Camry leaves 46.5 in, a crew-cab Silverado is 1.4 in over, and two Camrys are 147.0 in over. Diagram: CarportBay.

Check whether a listing's 20 ft is the frame depth or the roof depth, because one 30x21 listing has a 21 ft roof on a 20 ft frame. The limit is the same on narrower sizes with the same 20 ft depth.

Why two vehicles cannot park end to end

Two 2025 Toyota Camrys parked one behind the other measure 387.0 in bumper to bumper, 147.0 in over the 240 in depth. A 30x20 carport therefore holds one vehicle per bay and cannot take two end to end. Two Camrys in a row need about 32.3 ft before any space between them. For that layout, start with the 20x40 carport dimensions.

Is a 30x20 carport the same as a 20x30?

A 30x20 carport and a 20x30 carport cover the same 600 sq ft, turned 90 degrees from each other. The first number is the width. The 30x20 puts the 30 ft side across the front for three bays, and the 20x30 puts the 20 ft side across the front for two bays. Sellers list both names for the same footprint, so read the width in the listing and not the order of the numbers. The 20x30 carport layout works the same arithmetic with two bays and 360 in of depth.

What changes when the frame spans 30 feet?

A 30x20 carport spans 30 ft across its front, so each frame line carries the roof over a wider opening than a 20 ft carport does. A frame line is a pair of legs and the bow between them. Where a seller states 5 ft on center, a 20 ft length has 5 frame lines and a 30 ft length has 7.

Turned the other way, the same 600 sq ft has 7 frame lines that each span 20 ft, against 5 lines that each span 30 ft. This is arithmetic on the sellers' stated spacing and is not a structural calculation.

Each of the four listings read for a 30x20 metal carport states a 14 gauge frame, and Carport Central also lists 12 gauge.

What sellers state about wind and snow

Table 4 prints what each seller states on its own listing, read on October 5, 2026. These are the sellers' figures and not CarportBay figures. None of the four listings names a code edition in the text read, and a seller's rating says nothing about the loads your local code sets.

Wind and snow loads depend on the site, so the local building department decides which apply.

How tall should the legs of a 30x20 carport be?

A 30x20 carport with 8 ft legs clears a 2025 Toyota Camry, 56.9 in tall, by 39.1 in, and a 2026 Ford F-150, 80.7 in tall at its tallest, by 15.3 in. Leg height is measured at the top of the posts, so the roof peak sits higher.

Table 3: Inches between the vehicle roof and the leg height (negative means the vehicle is taller)

2026 Ford F-150, tallest figure80.7-8.7+15.3+27.3

At 6 ft legs the F-150 is 8.7 in taller than the posts and the Silverado 1500 crew cab is 3.4 in taller. Six foot legs suit only the Camry and the CR-V of these four. Alan's lists 6 ft as the standard leg height on its 30x20 vertical roof carport and says the height can be raised in 1 ft steps to 16 ft.

What does a 30x20 carport cost in 2026?

Listed prices for a 30x20 carport run from $2,995 to $18,000 because the sources describe different things. A seller listing prices one product with its own roof, height and sides, and an installed cost guide prices a range of finished projects. Table 5 keeps them apart and shows the seller, the date and whether installation is included.

Prices are listed by each seller on the date shown and change often. A listed price is not a quote.

On the listed 600 sq ft, Alan's regular roof works out to $4.99 per sq ft and its vertical roof to $5.83. The Angus sale price is $7.60 per sq ft.

The prices above cover the frame and roof. For which kits include legs, panels and hardware, see the carport kit buying guide.

Same seller, two orientations

Alan's Factory Outlet lists both directions of the same 600 sq ft. The 30x20 costs $600 more with a regular roof (+25.1 percent), $400 more with a boxed eave (+14.8 percent) and $400 more with a vertical roof (+12.9 percent). The listings state no reason for the gap, so Table 6 reports the difference and stops there.

Does a 30x20 carport need a concrete slab?

A 30x20 carport needs a slab only where the seller's installation terms or the site call for one. A slab for 600 sq ft costs about $3,000 to $6,000 at HomeGuide's $5 to $10 per sq ft, and about $2,400 to $4,800 at HomeAdvisor's $4 to $8 per sq ft. Metal Carport Depot's 30x21 listing names two ways to meet its certification basis: an existing slab with a proper footing, or the included helical anchors on a suitable surface.

Does a 30x20 carport need a permit?

A 30x20 carport covers 600 sq ft, which is 3.0 times the 200 sq ft permit exemption in IRC 2021 R105.2 for one-story detached accessory structures. Table 7 lists three published thresholds.

This table gives general information from the codes cited above. Confirm current requirements with your local building department before beginning construction.

California's 120 sq ft and Henrico County's 256 sq ft are written for sheds and similar uses, and neither names carports. At 600 sq ft the carport is 5.0 and 2.34 times those lines.

When does another size fit better than a 30x20?

A 30x20 carport suits three mid-size vehicles with one vehicle deep in each bay. Another size fits better when vehicles are longer, when two need to park end to end, or when only two need cover. Table 8 works the same arithmetic for five neighboring footprints.

Table 8: Other sizes against the 30x20 (arithmetic, width first)
