What is a double carport?

A double carport is a carport sized to shelter two vehicles side by side. It is a roof on posts with open sides. Listings also write the same structure as a 2 car carport. This guide covers width, door space, depth, height, roof, gauge, price and the permit line, and quotes each seller by name and date.

Two terms recur below. A gap is each of the three spaces in a side-by-side pair: beside the left vehicle, between the two vehicles and beside the right one. Leg height is the post height from the ground to the eave, which differs from the clear height under the lowest beam.

What do sellers call a double carport?

Sellers name a double carport "double", "double wide", "2-car" and "two car", so the label does not tell you the width. Table 2 quotes each seller's own label, width and price basis as read on October 5, 2026.

Some sellers, including Viking and Carport.com, name their two-car carport pages "double wide carports", and the same phrase also names a mobile home width. Canopia lists a 16 ft wide model as a double carport, and Legacy files widths from 12 ft under a two-car label, so confirm the width before you rely on the name.

How wide is a double carport?

Sellers list double carports from 18 to 24 ft wide, and Viking, Eagle, American Steel Inc and Carport Central all state that range.

Alan's also notes that carports sold with a "double" sign are usually only 18x20. The 22 and 24 ft rows come from sellers' own words, and door space is worked out in the next section. For other footprints and vehicle counts, use the carport size guide and sizing calculator.

How much door space do two vehicles get at each width?

At 20 ft wide, a double carport leaves two 2025 Toyota Camrys 31.7 in in each of the three spaces; at 18 ft the figure falls to 23.7 in.

The space per gap equals the width in inches minus the sum of the vehicle widths, divided by the number of vehicles plus one. The widths used are 72.4 in for the 2025 Toyota Camry, 79.9 in for the 2026 Ford F-150 (95.7 in with mirrors extended) and 81.1 in for the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab.

CarportBay treats a gap under 30 in as tight. That is a planning marker, not an industry standard. The figures are arithmetic on published dimensions, not a test, and mirror width, parking position and door swing change the real gap.

Alan's Factory Outlet states, in an article dated October 1, 2023, that 22 ft fits 2 cars and that 24 ft gives more space for opening doors. The Camry rows agree: 39.7 in at 22 ft and 47.7 in at 24 ft.

Two cars side by side

Two Camrys leave 23.7, 31.7, 39.7, 47.7 and 55.7 in per gap from 18 to 26 ft, so they clear the 30 in marker from 20 ft. A Camry and an F-150 leave 21.2, 29.2, 37.2, 45.2 and 53.2 in. The 20 ft row matches the 20x20 carport, which has its own page.

Two pickups side by side

Two F-150s leave 18.7 in at 18 ft and 26.7 in at 20 ft, both under the marker, and clear it from 22 ft at 34.7 in. With mirrors extended the gap is 8.2 in at 18 ft and stays under the marker through 22 ft (24.2 in). Two Silverados leave 17.9, 25.9 and 33.9 in at 18, 20 and 22 ft, so they clear the marker from 22 ft.

One vehicle with room on both sides

One Camry leaves 71.8 in on each side at 18 ft and 83.8 in at 20 ft. Three Camrys need 217.2 in of width, 1.2 in more than an 18 ft carport has. At 20 ft they leave 5.7 in per gap and at 22 ft 11.7 in, a parking fit and not a door-opening fit; at 26 ft they leave 23.7 in.

How long and how tall should a double carport be?

A double carport 20 ft deep is 3.9 in shorter than the longest 2026 Ford F-150 (243.9 in) and 1.4 in shorter than a 2025 Silverado 1500 crew cab (241.4 in). A 21 ft depth leaves 8.1 in beyond the F-150. Eagle Carports gives 20 to 24 ft as the usual length. See two-car carport dimensions for each depth.

A 6 ft leg is 72 in, lower than both pickups: the Silverado stands 75.4 in tall and the F-150 80.7 in. Carport.com lists 6 and 8 ft legs on its double wide carports, and AA Metal Buildings says standard legs are usually 6 to 7 ft.

Eave height is not the same as clearance under the lowest beam, so confirm the seller's stated clearance.

Which roof styles and steel gauge do double carports come in?

A double carport comes in three roof styles. Viking lists regular, A-frame and vertical roofs on its double wide page. Legacy Carports and Carport Central list a regular roof, a boxed eave A-frame roof and a vertical roof.

Legacy lists a 14 gauge steel frame as standard and 12 gauge as an upgrade. Carport.com and AA Metal Buildings list 14 gauge frames, and Carport.com, AA and Discount Ramps list 29 gauge roof panels.

Legacy Carports describes 12 gauge steel as roughly 38 percent thicker than 14 gauge. On the gauge table CarportBay uses, 0.1046 in against 0.0747 in works out to 40.0 percent.

Steel is the common frame. Home Depot lists cedar 20x20 kits, and Canopia lists aluminum frames with polycarbonate or corrugated roofs.

What does a double carport cost?

Double carport prices fall into three layers: kit only, seller-listed with delivery and installation, and cost guides. Each row below shows its seller, size and what the price includes, as read on October 5, 2026.

Price per square foot is the listed price divided by width times depth. Kit rows and installed rows measure different things, so compare a row with others in its layer. Kit prices cover the structure; the carport kit buying guide lists which kits include legs, panels and hardware.

Buyers who assemble a kit themselves can follow do-it-yourself installation steps.

Does a double carport need a permit, and where do the other questions go?

Permit line

Under the 2021 International Residential Code, section R105.2 item 1, a one-story detached accessory structure of 200 sq ft or less is on the list of work exempt from a building permit. Every double carport footprint above (360 to 780 sq ft) is 1.8 to 3.9 times that area. Local rules differ and later code editions may change the figure, so check with your local building department before you build. For local differences, see carport permit rules and thresholds.
