Metal RV Carports: Clearance, Size and Price by RV Class
CarportBay Editorial Team Reviewed

A metal RV carport works only if its leg height clears the roof gear on the RV, and leg height is not the roof peak. Seller guides give 12 to 14 feet of leg height for a Class C and 14 to 16 feet for a Class A. Widths run from 12 to 18 feet or more with pop-outs.
This page covers the RV sizes of metal carports.

How tall should a metal RV carport be?
A metal RV carport needs a leg height of 12 to 14 feet for a Class C and 14 to 16 feet for a Class A, according to the seller guides checked in October 2026. Leg height is the height from the ground to the top of the leg, at the eave.
Three heights that sellers use as one
A metal RV carport has three heights: the RV's published height, the carport's leg height at the eave, and the clearance the RV actually has. Carport.com states that vehicle clearance is the leg height, not the peak of the roof. EMB Metal Buildings says two carports can have the same leg height but different interior clearance.
This page measures clearance as leg height minus RV height. A 14-foot leg is 168 inches, so a 134-inch RV leaves 34 inches under the eave. Published RV heights can also leave out rooftop gear. MaxSteel Buildings puts rooftop air conditioning at about 12 to 18 inches.
Leg height by RV class
Alan's Factory Outlet gives a leg height of 12 feet for a Class C, 14 feet for most Class A coaches and fifth wheels, and up to 16 feet when rooftop A/C or solar is fitted. EMB and MaxSteel give wider ranges, and the three sellers differ most on travel trailers.
| RV class | Alan's Factory Outlet (page updated 2026-07-17) | EMB Metal Buildings (2026-03-02) | MaxSteel Buildings (2026-08-26) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class B | Standard sidewall (12x30) | Not listed | 12 to 14 ft |
| Class C | 12 ft (12x40) | 13 to 14 ft | 12 to 14 ft |
| Class A | 14 ft; up to 16 ft with rooftop A/C or solar | 14 to 16 ft | 14 to 16+ ft |
| Fifth wheel | 14 ft (14x45) | 14 ft | 14 to 16+ ft |
| Travel trailer | Standard sidewall (12x35) | 12 ft | 14 to 16+ ft |
Alan's prints sidewall height with each suggested size, so its Class B and travel trailer rows show the standard sidewall.

Six RVs against 12, 14 and 16 foot legs
A 2025 Newmar Dutch Star 4369 is 157 inches high, so a 14-foot leg leaves 11 inches and a 16-foot leg leaves 35 inches. The table does the same arithmetic for six RVs from 115 to 157 inches high, and prints a negative result as does not clear, with the shortfall in inches.
| RV, model year and height source | Height (in) | 12 ft leg (144 in) | 14 ft leg (168 in) | 16 ft leg (192 in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Airstream Flying Cloud 25FB, travel trailer (RV Guide listing) | 115 | 29 in | 53 in | 77 in |
| 2026 Winnebago Revel 44E, Class B (maker page) | 120 | 24 in | 48 in | 72 in |
| 2025 Thor Four Winds 31EV, Class C (RV Guide listing) | 134 | 10 in | 34 in | 58 in |
| 2024 Winnebago Vista 31B, Class A (maker page) | 146 | Does not clear (2 in short) | 22 in | 46 in |
| 2025 Grand Design Reflection 337RLS, fifth wheel (RV Guide listing) | 150 | Does not clear (6 in short) | 18 in | 42 in |
| 2025 Newmar Dutch Star 4369, Class A (dealer listing) | 157 | Does not clear (13 in short) | 11 in | 35 in |
Clearance here is measured to the eave. RV Guide lists the 2020 model year Dutch Star 4369 at 156 inches. Heights from RV Guide or a dealer listing should be checked against the maker's sheet for your model year.
Why seller buffer advice disagrees
Sellers disagree on how much clearance a metal RV carport needs: EMB Metal Buildings (2026-03-02) says to add 6 to 12 inches, and MaxSteel Buildings (2026-08-26) says the carport should be about 3 to 5 feet taller than the RV, rooftop accessories included. For the 134-inch Four Winds 31EV, the EMB rule gives a leg of 140 to 146 inches, so a 12-foot leg (144 inches) works. The MaxSteel rule gives 170 to 194 inches, so a 14-foot leg (168 inches) is 2 inches under its minimum and a 16-foot leg (192 inches) falls inside the range.
For the 157-inch Dutch Star 4369, the EMB rule gives 163 to 169 inches and a 14-foot leg fits. The MaxSteel rule gives 193 to 217 inches, and a 16-foot leg is 1 inch under the minimum. This page names no winner, because the buffer you need depends on rooftop gear and roof style.

What size metal RV carport do you need?
A metal RV carport for a Class A or fifth wheel is typically 14 feet wide and 45 feet long, and 12x30 to 12x40 covers a Class B, Class C or travel trailer, per Alan's Factory Outlet (page updated 2026-07-17).
| RV class | Typical length | Typical height | Suggested size and sidewall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class A | 30 to 45 ft | 12 to 13 ft | 14x45, 14 ft sidewall |
| Class C | 25 to 35 ft | 10 to 11 ft | 12x40, 12 ft sidewall |
| Travel trailer | 20 to 35 ft | 10 to 11 ft | 12x35, standard sidewall |
| Fifth wheel | 30 to 40 ft | 12 to 13 ft | 14x45, 14 ft sidewall |
| Class B | 16 to 25 ft | 8 to 10 ft | 12x30, standard sidewall |
Sizes are written width x length in feet. For how each dimension is measured, read carport dimensions in feet and inches.
Carport.com lists about 12 feet wide for a camper, about 18 feet wide with pop-outs, which are the side sections that extend when the RV is parked, and about 26 feet wide if a tow vehicle parks beside the coach. A 101.5-inch RV body, the width listed for the Airstream Flying Cloud 25FB and the Dutch Star 4369, sits 21.3 inches from each leg in a 12-foot width, 33.3 inches in a 14-foot width and 57.3 inches in an 18-foot width.
Footprint pages go further: RV carport sizes and 16x40 RV carport cover the sizes by vehicle. The same frames at car widths are on the two-car metal carports page.

Which roof style suits an RV?
A metal RV carport comes with a regular, boxed eave or vertical roof, and sellers rate the vertical roof best for heavy weather and spans of 40 feet or more. Alan's Factory Outlet describes the regular roof as the lowest price, the boxed eave as an A-frame look, and the vertical roof as the most popular.
For an RV, the roof also changes the height you can use. EMB says a regular roof gives decent height in the middle but less near the sides, an A-frame roof gives better center clearance, and a vertical roof offers the most usable height overall. No seller page read prints a clearance figure by roof style, so ask the seller about the peak.
Roof style and leg height together drive most of the price gap in the cost section below. For the three roofs in more detail, read metal roof carport styles.
12-gauge or 14-gauge for an RV carport?
Sellers list 14-gauge as the standard frame for a metal RV carport and 12-gauge as the upgrade, and they disagree on whether an RV needs it. Alan's Factory Outlet lists a 14-gauge galvanized steel tube frame as standard, 12-gauge as a premium upgrade and 29-gauge panels. Carport.com lists 14-gauge American steel as standard and recommends 12-gauge for many RVs.
| Gauge | Thickness (in) | Where sellers state it |
|---|---|---|
| 12 gauge | 0.1046 | Upgrade at Alan's; recommended for many RVs at Carport.com; stated at American Metal Buildings |
| 14 gauge | 0.0747 | Standard frame at Alan's and Carport.com; stated at American Metal Buildings |
| 29 gauge | Not listed on the chart | Standard panel at Alan's |
Metal Supermarkets charts 12-gauge mild steel at 0.1046 inch and 14-gauge at 0.0747 inch, so 12-gauge is about 40 percent thicker. EMB Metal Buildings prints 0.105 and 0.075 inch. These are seller specifications, not an engineering rule. For frames and panels across steel carports, read how steel carports compare.
What does a metal RV carport cost?
Listed prices for a metal RV carport on October 6, 2026 ran from $5.68 to $15.90 per square foot, and leg height and roof style moved the price more than floor area did. The table lists eight seller pages read on 2026-10-06, with price per square foot derived as the listed price divided by width times length.
| Seller, product and size | Listed price | Square feet | Price per sq ft (derived) | Read on |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Get Carports, metal RV carport, 13 ft legs, vertical roof, 18x30 | $8,585, listed price | 540 | $15.90 | 2026-10-06 |
Prices are the listed prices on the dates shown. Sellers change them, and several state that prices vary by state or customization, so confirm the current price and what it includes with the seller.
The tables above report what each source states, so you can compare on their own words before you ask anyone for a price.
The two ends of the range sit on one footprint. Get Carports lists an 18x30 (540 square feet) at $3,065 with 7-foot legs and a regular roof, and at $8,585 with 13-foot legs and a vertical roof. That is $5,520 more, or 180 percent: $8,585 minus $3,065 is $5,520, and $5,520 divided by $3,065 is 1.80. The footprint has its own page: 18x30 metal RV carport.
Other rows differ in scope. Carport.com states a starting price for an 18x41 with 12-foot legs, Skyline shows a sale price against a regular price of $8,535, and the American Metal Buildings page was last modified on 2023-07-06, so read that row as a dated listing.
Read how carports are sold: manufacturer versus dealer, then compare two rows, since a listed price comes from whichever company sells it.
Does a metal RV carport need a permit?
A metal RV carport covers 420 to 1,200 square feet in the price table, above the 200 square feet that section R105.2 of the 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) exempts for a one-story detached accessory structure, as Grant County, Washington prints the 2021 text. The El Dorado County copy of the 2022 California Residential Code uses 120 square feet.
| Footprint | Square feet | Against the 200 sq ft model-code line | Against the 120 sq ft California line |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12x25 | 300 | 100 over | 180 over |
| 12x35 | 420 | 220 over | 300 over |
| 18x30 | 540 | 340 over | 420 over |
| 20x60 | 1200 | 1000 over | 1080 over |
Local rules differ and later editions can change the wording. Confirm current requirements with your local building department before beginning construction. Read how carport permit rules work for the rule by size and place.
When a metal RV carport is the wrong choice
A metal RV carport is the wrong choice for an RV that needs more than the 16 feet of leg height where the Alan's and EMB guides stop, for a coach you want fully enclosed, or where a lease or covenant bars the structure.
On height, the MaxSteel rule asks for a leg at least 3 feet above the RV, so a coach taller than 156 inches needs more than a 16-foot leg: 157 plus 36 is 193 inches, and a 16-foot leg is 192. Four of the six heights in this page come from RV Guide or a dealer listing, so check the maker's sheet for your exact model year and equipment.
A fully enclosed RV needs wall and door framing, which an open carport price leaves out, so ask the seller for an enclosed quote. A lease, homeowners association rule or covenant can bar a permanent structure, so read that document before you order.
Metal RV carport questions
Match leg height to the RV's height plus its rooftop gear, and width to the RV plus its pop-outs. Alan's Factory Outlet pairs 12x30 with a Class B, 12x40 with a Class C, 12x35 with a travel trailer and 14x45 with a Class A or fifth wheel.
12 to 14 feet of leg height for a Class C and 14 to 16 feet for a Class A, in the seller guides checked in October 2026. Leg height is the height at the eave, not the roof peak, so check it against your RV and its rooftop gear.
Listed prices on the dated rows ran from $3,065 to $10,950, or $5.68 to $15.90 per square foot, on October 6, 2026. The price table names each seller and date.
No. Leg height is the height at the eave, and clearance is the room an RV has under it. Carport.com states that vehicle clearance is the leg height, not the peak.
Sellers differ. Alan's Factory Outlet lists 14-gauge as standard with 12-gauge as an upgrade, and Carport.com recommends 12-gauge for many RVs. 12-gauge steel is 0.1046 inch thick and 14-gauge is 0.0747 inch.
The one whose leg height clears your RV plus rooftop gear, whose width covers pop-outs, and whose seller states delivery, installation and anchoring in writing.
Yes, where a seller offers the size as a kit. Compare metal carport kits and check the permit threshold first, because every RV footprint from 12x25 is above 200 square feet.
It depends on your local rule. Every RV footprint from 12x25 is above the 200 square feet in the 2021 model IRC, and a 12x35 is 420 square feet.
