What is a vertical roof on a carport?
A vertical roof carport is a peaked-roof carport whose panels run from the ridge to the eaves instead of across the building.
Sellers name three roof styles. A regular roof has rounded eaves and horizontal panels. A boxed eave roof has straight gable sides and horizontal panels. A vertical roof has straight gable sides, and its panels run ridge to eave on hat-channel or purlin framing under a ridge cap. Sellers list the vertical roof last when they state a price order.
Regular, boxed eave and vertical, side by side
| Roof style | Shape and panels | What sellers call it |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | Rounded eaves, horizontal panels | Regular roof. Listed lowest by every seller that states a price order. |
| Boxed eave | Straight gable sides, horizontal panels | Boxed eave, A-frame horizontal, A-frame |
| Vertical | Straight gable sides, panels run ridge to eave on hat-channel or purlin framing, ridge cap | Vertical, A-frame vertical, vertical style. Listed highest by every seller that states a price order. |
Sellers also use A-frame for the peaked shape, with horizontal or vertical panels, so the word alone leaves panel direction open. A listing that says A-frame vertical carries panels from ridge to eave, as Coast to Coast Carports names it.
How is a vertical roof built?
Sellers name hat channels or purlins as the extra framing under vertical panels, with a ridge cap along the peak.
Metal America and Direct Metal Structures both describe the vertical roof as carrying extra framing under the panels, with a ridge cap where the two roof planes meet. Legacy Carports names that framing as the reason a roof style is hard to change after install. Carport Commander describes side entry and deep eave trim on vertical buildings, and Coast to Coast Carports lists 13 colors.
Panel types and gauges for metal roofs are covered in the metal roof carport guide.

What does a vertical roof add to the price?
Sellers list a vertical roof above a regular or boxed-eave roof, and the gaps read run from $125 to $1,200, by seller and size.
Alan's Factory Outlet lists three roof styles on one triple-wide carport, and the vertical roof is the highest. The regular roof reads $2,795, the boxed eave roof $2,895 and the vertical roof $3,195. That puts the vertical roof $400 above the regular roof and $300 above the boxed eave roof, or 14.3 percent and 10.4 percent of the lower price. The three prices are Shopping card prices read on 2026-10-06.
Same-seller pairs
Carport.com lists a 12x21x8 carport at $4,085 with a boxed eave roof and $4,210 with a vertical roof. The $125 gap is 3.1 percent of the boxed eave price. A pair counts here when one seller lists both roofs on one building, so the gap reflects the roof style and not a different seller or size.
Seller ranges and percentages
Direct Metal Structures states 8 to 15 percent on small buildings (page dated 2025-09-10). Metal America prints $400 to $1,200 for vertical against $200 to $600 for A-frame (article dated 2026-03-18). Eagle Carports prints a vertical upgrade of $400 to $1,200, and Bargain Metal Buildings prints $300 to $400 on a 12x12 against $150 to $200 for A-frame.
The Alan's regular and boxed eave cards print no size. The 520 sq ft printed on the vertical card is applied to all three.
Sellers named on this page are named from their own listings, read on 2026-10-06 unless a date is printed beside a figure. Prices change, so check the seller's page before you buy.

What do sellers say a vertical roof does?
Seller pages credit a vertical roof with faster shedding and a stronger frame, and one seller states that panel direction changes upkeep rather than code loads.
Legacy Carports (2026-04-09), Direct Metal Structures (2025-09-10), Coast to Coast Carports, Eagle Carports and Carport Central say a vertical roof sheds rain, snow and debris faster. Metal America, American Carports Inc, Alan's Factory Outlet and Carport.com call it the stronger roof. Direct Metal Structures says framing, anchors and fasteners decide loads, and that panel direction changes upkeep, with fewer ledges and clogs on vertical panels.
Carport Commander says horizontal roofs have no peak seam and vertical roofs drain faster, while Metal America says horizontal splices leak on long buildings and Direct Metal Structures places leaks at laps, screws and sealant. Alan's prints a 4/12 to 6/12 pitch for vertical roofs against 3/12 standard, and AA Metal Buildings prints 3:12 on one 20x40 vertical.
| Claim | Who prints it | How the page states it |
|---|---|---|
| A vertical roof sheds rain, snow and debris faster | Legacy Carports (2026-04-09), Direct Metal Structures (2025-09-10), Coast to Coast Carports, Eagle Carports, Carport Central | Attributed to each seller. No test, pitch figure or code edition is printed alongside it. |
| A vertical roof is the stronger roof | Metal America, American Carports Inc, Alan's Factory Outlet, Carport.com | Attributed. The same pages tie the rated loads to the building and maker. |
| Panel direction changes upkeep, not code loads; framing, anchors and fasteners decide loads | Direct Metal Structures (2025-09-10) | Attributed, and set beside the claims above as the one seller statement that disagrees. |
| Horizontal panels leak at splices on long buildings | Metal America | Attributed. Direct Metal Structures places leaks at laps, screws and sealant. |
| Horizontal roofs have no peak seam; vertical drains faster | Carport Commander | Attributed. It reads opposite to the Metal America seam claim. |
| Switching from regular to vertical later is not simple | Legacy Carports, Direct Metal Structures | Attributed. Both name the sub-framing as the reason. |
No claim in the table comes with a test, a pitch table or a code edition on the seller's page. Each is printed here as that seller's statement.

Do wind, snow and warranty terms change with the roof style?
The rated loads and warranty terms on the seller pages read belong to a named building and maker, and the warranty lines name gauge and component rather than roof direction.
AA Metal Buildings prints 140 mph and 30 PSF, certified, on its 20x26x7 vertical carport. Metal America lists standard snow loads of 25 to 35 PSF, and Quictent prints a 35 PSF load capacity on DIY kits. Each figure belongs to the building, kit and maker that prints it.
Warranty lines name a component and a term. Carport Central lists a 10-year panel warranty and 20-year rust-through on framing. AA Metal Buildings lists 1 year for rust and 90 days for workmanship. Metal America prints a 20-year rust warranty for a 12-gauge frame, set against 10 years.
Carport.com, Eagle Carports and AA Metal Buildings print 14-gauge frames and 29-gauge panels, and Carport Central prints 14-gauge. For a site's own snow and wind conditions, check the rated loads printed for the specific building and ask the local building department what applies.
When do sellers require a vertical roof?
Sellers set a length limit for horizontal panels at about 35 or 36 feet, and no code source read requires a vertical roof.
Metal America states that horizontal panels top out at 35 feet and that it requires vertical over that length as its own rule. carport1.com sets a rule over 35 feet as well. Direct Metal Structures says horizontal works to about 36 feet when debris and snow are light, and Coast to Coast Carports says it has no 36-foot restriction. These are seller rules, and they differ.
No code source read for this page requires a vertical roof. The 30x41 listings in the next section are 6 feet past the 35-foot figure and 5 feet past the 36-foot figure.
What do 20x26 and 30x41 vertical roof carports cost?
Listings returned for the 20x26 and 30x41 queries on 2026-10-06 run from $3,195 to $6,810 and from $7,695 to $24,612, and the rows differ in height, gauge and scope.
For the footprint nearest the 20x26 listings, see 20x30 carport sizes.
The 20x26 footprint is 520 square feet and the 30x41 footprint is 1,230. Each row carries its source type: a page read, a search snippet or a Shopping card. Per square foot is the listed price over width times length.
| Seller | Listing | Price | Per sq ft on 520 | Source type |

Per square foot runs $6.14 to $13.10 on the five 20x26 listings and $6.26 to $20.01 on the nine 30x41 listings. The rows differ in height, gauge and scope, so the ranges describe listings and not the price of a roof style. The $24,612 row is a lean-to garage, and the Carport Central row is 14 feet high with one side closed. Carport.com, Coast to Coast Carports, Metal America and Alan's list free delivery and installation in service areas.

What should you ask a seller before pricing one?
Before pricing a vertical roof carport, ask the seller six questions about the build, because the roof style alone settles little.
| Ask the seller | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which roof style is this listing, by name? | The word A-frame alone leaves open whether panels run horizontally or ridge to eave. |
| What sub-framing sits under the panels, and at what spacing? | Hat channels or purlins are the extra framing sellers name for a vertical roof. |
| What is the frame gauge and the panel gauge? | Several sellers list 14-gauge frames and 29-gauge panels as standard, and warranties name gauge and component. |
| Which wind and snow ratings apply to this building, and is a certified drawing included? | Ratings belong to a named building and maker, and a rating printed for one unit stays with that unit and size. |
| What is your length rule for horizontal panels? | The 35 and 36 foot figures are seller rules, and they differ. |
| What does the warranty cover, by component, and for how many years? | Panel, rust-through and workmanship terms are separate lines at the sellers read. |
A seller that names the roof style, framing, gauge, ratings, length rule and warranty lines gives a price that can sit beside another seller's on equal terms.
The tables above report what each source states, so you can compare sellers on their own words before you ask anyone for a price.
Vertical roof carport questions
A vertical roof is a peaked carport roof whose panels run from the ridge to the eaves. It sits on hat-channel or purlin sub-framing and carries a ridge cap. A regular roof has rounded eaves and horizontal panels, and a boxed eave roof has straight gable sides and horizontal panels.
Two same-seller pairs read on 2026-10-06 show a $400 gap against a regular roof and a $125 gap against a boxed eave. The gaps are 14.3 percent and 3.1 percent. Seller upgrade ranges run up to $1,200, and Direct Metal Structures states 8 to 15 percent on small buildings.
Sellers disagree. Metal America and American Carports Inc call vertical the stronger roof. Direct Metal Structures states that framing, anchors and fasteners decide loads and that panel direction changes upkeep, not code loads. Compare the rated wind and snow loads printed for the specific building, and ask who certified them.
Seller pages say so, including Legacy Carports, Direct Metal Structures, Eagle Carports and Coast to Coast Carports. Alan's prints a 4/12 to 6/12 pitch for vertical roofs against 3/12 standard. No page read gives a test, so ask the seller for the pitch of the exact building.
No code source read requires it. Metal America and carport1.com set their own rule near 35 feet for horizontal panels, and Direct Metal Structures says horizontal works to about 36 feet. Coast to Coast says it has no 36-foot restriction, so ask the seller for its rule.
Two sellers say it is not simple. Legacy Carports says major components must be replaced to switch, and Direct Metal Structures says a vertical roof needs sub-framing, so the choice is made before install. Choose the roof style at purchase, and ask the seller what a later change would involve.
Sellers use A-frame for the peaked shape. A-frame horizontal carries horizontal panels, and A-frame vertical carries panels from ridge to eave. A vertical roof carport is the A-frame vertical form, so check each listing for panel direction, because the word A-frame alone leaves panel direction open.
