Does Amarillo require a permit for a carport?

The City of Amarillo's no-permit list names one-story sheds, playhouses and similar structures up to 200 square feet and does not name carports.

What the city's no-permit list covers

The City of Amarillo Building Safety page on work exempt from a permit, last modified July 10, 2025, lists one-story detached accessory structures up to 200 square feet. The page gives tool and storage sheds and playhouses as examples. It also lists items such as fences up to 8 feet and retaining walls up to 4 feet. The words carport and canopy do not appear on the page, so it does not say whether a carport needs a permit.

A 10x20 carport covers 200 square feet, a 12x20 covers 240 and a 20x20 covers 400. Those are footprint areas, and the city page does not say the shed limit applies to carports. The 20x20 carport size guide shows the sizes side by side.

Why a dealer's 200 square foot rule does not settle it

A dealer FAQ says Amarillo requires a permit for any building over 200 square feet, which is the dealer's statement and not the city's. The statement comes from the FAQ page of Derksen Factory, read on October 6, 2026, and the page carries no date. Treat it as a seller's summary and not as a city rule.

Building Safety is the office that can say whether your carport, at your size and on your lot, needs a permit. Ask before you order.

What do Amarillo's permit fee lines look like, and how do you apply?

The City of Amarillo fee page lists $81.00 for residential plan review and application.

It also lists $0.50 per square foot for new construction and $0.32 per square foot for remodel or addition, with a $135 minimum on the second. The fee page has no line for carports, so Building Safety is the office that confirms which line applies to your project. A fee line for one type of work does not tell you what a carport costs to permit. Building Safety takes permit applications online through MGO Connect.

Where can a carport go on an Amarillo lot?

Amarillo's zoning code decides how close a carport can sit to a lot line, and the distance depends on the zoning district.

An attached steel carport on the side of a single-story brick house shelters a 2023 Toyota Camry, with flat open land and sky behind the lot.

Setback distances sit in the zoning code and vary by district and lot. Ask the city's planning and zoning staff which setbacks apply to your address, and ask for the code section number so a seller can quote against it.

Wind and snow

Design wind speed and ground snow load depend on the exact address and the code edition, so a seller's plans should state both.

The ASCE Hazard Tool looks up wind and snow values by address. Published figures for the Amarillo area differ from source to source. Use the value the Hazard Tool returns for your address, and ask the seller which edition its plans use.

Panhandle weather

The National Weather Service office in Amarillo records about 21 tornadoes a year across its forecast area in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. That is an average for 1980 to 2009. About 80% of severe thunderstorm wind events in that area fall between May and August. The largest hail the document lists is 6 inches, on June 12, 2010.

These figures describe the forecast area and not the city alone.
